Australia registered a two-wicket win over England at Edgbaston in the first match of the ongoing Ashes 2023. Before this match, all eyes were on Australia as they were having the top three ranked Test batters in their team. Marnus Labuschagne was in the top spot, Steve Smith was in the second spot, and Travis Head was in the third spot.

But, after the match, as per the latest update, Joe Root is now the new number-one ranked Test batter in the world with 887 rating points. Root scored 118* and 46 runs in the match. While Labuschagne managed only 0 and 13 runs in the game. Thus, he is now dropped to the third spot with 877 rating points. Steve Smith scored 16 and six runs. As a result, he is now placed in the sixth spot with 861 rating points.

Joe Root performed with both the bat and ball in the 1st Ashes 2023 Test 

Kane Williamson moved to the second spot with 883 rating points. Travis Head scored 50 and 16 runs. So, he is now in the fourth position with 873 rating points. Seeing that, fans went crazy and shared their views. Even, in the all-rounder list, Joe Root became the new eight-ranked all-rounder in the longest format of the game. In this match apart from batting, he bowled 22 overs in total. He also took one wicket by conceding 58 runs, including five maidens.

Regarding his performance, England skipper Ben Stokes was also elated during the post-match presentation ceremony. He said: “Incredible, for your senior batter to play the way he did yesterday. The game was in the balance and the bravery to go out and play as he did was unbelievable.” Stokes also claimed that he did a fantastic job with the ball also while bowling as a spin partner of Moeen Ali. Speaking about Root’s Test career, he has now scored 11168 runs in 240 innings of 131 matches, at an average of 50.76. He has smashed 58 fifties and 30 centuries.
