Virat Kohli's decision to step down as India's Test captain took the world by storm. Earlier, he had quit the T20I captaincy after the 20-20 World Cup 2021, and was axed as India's ODI captain. He is now no longer India's captain in either of the three formats of the game.

Nevertheless, the 33-year-old will definitely go down as one of the greatest Indian captains of all time. Besides, no other captain from India has won more Tests than him. However, the batting maestro isn't too bothered about not being the captain.

He felt that one doesn't really need to be the captain of a team to be the leader. During Digit's 'Firseside Chat with VK', Kohli stated that one can win games for his side as a batter as well. He was of the opinion that he might be able to contribute more to his team as a batter.

"Everything has a tenure and time period. You obviously have to be aware of that. People might say 'what this guy has done' but you know when you think of moving forward and achieving more, you feel like you have done your job," said Virat Kohli.

"Now as a batsman maybe you have more things to contribute to the team. You can make the team win more. So take pride in that. You don't need to be a captain to be a leader. As simple as that," he added.

Kohli then gave the example of MS Dhoni, and explained how he was still giving his inputs to the team despite not being the captain. He then stated that one has to embrace all kinds of roles. Further on, he added that irrespective of him being the captain or not, his mindset will always be to win games for India.

"When MS Dhoni was in the team it was not like that he was not a leader. He was still the guy we were going to constantly to get input. One has to embrace all kinds of roles and responsibilities. I have played under MS as a player and I have been the captain of the team for a long time, my mindset has been the same. I always thought like a captain even when I was a player. I want to make the team win. I have to be my own leader," he said.
