Yograj Singh reveals Sunil Gavaskar received death threats from West Indies pacers

Former Indian pacer Yograj Singh has revealed the aggressive sledging the former Indian captain and commentator Sunil Gavaskar faced against the West Indies during his playing time. Notably, Gavaskar averaged 65.45 against WI without sporting high-end protective gear.

While Yograj was asked to talk about the repeated fines imposed on the Lucknow Super Giants spinners Digvesh Rathi during the Indian Premier League 2025 season for his aggressive celebration style, he mentioned Gavaskar's incidents against the mighty West Indies.

"You should have seen the West Indians. Ask Sunil Gavaskar. He will tell you. 'Oh, it's another man. Small man. I'm going to kill you, man. You have kids. Go home. You bloody this and this and this and this'. People like Michael Holding, Marshall and all the guys are coming and abusing you. Hitting you on the head, bruising you. Go to the hospital. But they were also very harsh words," Yograj Singh told InsideSport.

"So were the Australians. So were the South Africans. And why not? No one carries it outside. Till you go out of the way to destroy anybody's career. That is not acceptable,” he added.

Furthermore, Yograj also slammed the then BCCI selection committee chief Mohinder Amarnath, for allegedly destroying the careers of players like Gautam Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid.

Though India went on to win the 2011 World Cup under MS Dhoni, they were in the transition phase over the next few years as they got whitewashed 0-4 in away Tests against England and Australia.

"You (BCCI selectors) just destroyed these boys for no reason. Boys like Gautam Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Mohammed Kaif, VVS Laxman, Rahul Dravid. You just made them go after 2011," Yograj asserted.

"You just destroyed the team after the 2011 World Cup. The careers of 7 players were put into the gutter. That is why we are struggling," Yograj concluded.
