In IPL 2023 so far, Shankar has scored 205 runs in eight matches, at an average of 41 and a strike rate of 158.91. He has notched up two fifties also. However, the ODI World Cup will take place in India and Team India are not sure of their middle order due to the injury concerns of Shreyas Iyer. So, Shankar can be an option as a number four batter for the team. Regarding his World Cup aspirations, Vijay Shankar opened up in an exclusive chat with News18.

“I think if you are on the right path, things will happen automatically." - Vijay Shankar

He said: "I am not thinking much of it honestly because it’s a long way from here and If I keep doing what I am doing, things will eventually happen. I don’t have to dream of getting into the World Cup team or getting back into the Indian team, I think if you are on the right path, things will happen automatically." During that interaction, Shankar also opened up about the positive impact Ashish Nehra has brought on him, personally.

If not for him, I wouldn’t have been playing here. You can actually see that he has played a lot of cricket. Whatever he speaks, he explains and expresses it in such a way that we either understand." However, Shankar has played for Team India in both the ODIs and T20Is. He was also a part of the 2019 ODI World Cup squad. Till now, he has played 12 ODIs and 9 T20Is.
