The stage is getting ready at the Oval, England for the World Test Championship final between India and Australia, starting from 7 to 11 June 2023. So, for the grand clash, the Apex Council of Cricket announced the list of umpires. They claimed that Chris Gaffaney of New Zealand and Richard Illingworth of England will be the on-field umpires.
Then, England's Richard Kettleborough will be the TV Umpire (Third Umpire) while Sri Lanka's Kumar Dharmasena will be the fourth umpire. Listening to such news, fans reacted on social media as Richard Kettleborough has an unwanted record to his name for India’s awful performances in recent losses in all knockout games.
India last won a major title in 2013
Apparently, India have an awful record in knockout games of the major tournament since their last major title in 2013. Then, in the 2014 20-20 World Cup, they lost the final. In the 2015 ODI World Cup, they lost in the semi-final. After that, in the 2016 20-20 World Cup, the Men in Blue lost the semi-final and lost the final in the 2017 Champions Trophy. Then, in the 2019 ODI World Cup, they lost in the semi-final. Kettleborough was an official in all those matches and thus, seeing him as an option again in a final, left Indian fans worried.
However, he was not an official in the 2022 20-20 World Cup semi-final loss of Team India against England. Speaking of this clash, this will be India’s second consecutive WTC final. In the previous match, they lost against New Zealand. So, this time, fans will hope for a win from them. While the Aussies will look to win this prestigious title at their maiden attempt. Regarding the final, Ricky Ponting shared the favourites to win the final. He said: “I would have to say Australia (are the favourites). I am going more (with Australia) because of the conditions. If this game was played in India, I would say this was a really hard game for Australia to win. If this game was played in Australia, I would say Aussies are the heavy favourites.”
