The Australian cricket team suffered a setback ahead of the second and final Test against West Indies as Cameron Green tested positive for Covid-19. However, in a surprising development, the defending world Test champions included the star all-rounder in their Playing XI for the pink-ball Test at the Gabba in Brisbane despite his illness.

Apart from Green, head coach Andrew McDonald and Travis Head were also infected with the virus. Australia have fielded the same team that played in Adelaide, meaning Head has also taken the field for the day/night Test. However, it is known that the southpaw's result was negative in the last test.

According to Cricket Australia protocol, Green and McDonald will not be barred from being part of the second Test, but will be separated from the squad until they return with a negative Covid-19 test.

"Cameron Green and Andrew McDonald will be separated from the group until they return a negative test. It will not hinder Green taking part in or McDonald attending the match in line with CA protocols," Cricket Australia said in a statement hours ahead of the Gabba Test.

Meanwhile, Green was seen social distancing from his teammates during the national anthem after the toss. Fans on social media wondered how this would ensure the safety of other players. Although the 24-year-old is asymptomatic, it could have a wider impact on the team due to concerns over potential health risks.

Talking about the match, West Indies won the toss and elected to bat first. The first session is underway and at the drinks break before the 14th over, the visitors are batting at 31 for the loss of one wicket. Notably, Australia are currently 1-0 up in the series and will be looking for a whitewash.
