On 3 May 2023, England won the one-off Test match against Ireland at the Lords by 10 wickets. Ollie Pope won the Player of the Match award for his 205-run knock in the first innings. So, it was another victory under the leadership of Ben Stokes. But, the England Test skipper registered a bizarre record to his name with this victory.

He became the first captain to win a Test match without doing batting, bowling or wicketkeeping. In both innings, he did not bat and bowl. Seeing such a record, fans went crazy and shared funny replies on social media. Speaking of the match, Ireland batted first and got bundled out for 172 runs in 56.2 overs.

In reply, England scored 524 runs for four wickets and declared the innings in 82.4 overs. Ollie Pope smashed a double century while Ben Duckett scored a century along with fifties each from Zak Crawley and Joe Root. Thus, the home side took the lead of 352 runs. In reply, in the second innings, Ireland scored 362 runs for nine wickets in 86.2 overs and set a target of 11 runs for England. They chased down the target in just four balls and won the match by 10 wickets.

After the match, Ben Stokes said: “Thought Ireland came out and showed grit and determination. Gives us a little insight into what we might have to do against Australia. It got flatter as it went on. Trying to take the game on in our own way allowed us to potentially bowl them out without batting again. Ireland had to get a really good score to put us under pressure. Good test and credit to Ireland today.” On the Ashes, he said: “Not much more we can do. The new way is you get as ready as you can, get in the right frame of mind. Great to get back as a group, spending quality time together before the Ashes. Really looking forward to it."
