While chasing 281 runs, the Aussies finished day four with 107 runs on the board for three wickets in 30 overs. Usman Khawaja and the nightwatchman, Scott Boland were the overnight batters.
So, fans were hoping for a great contest on the final day. But, the match got delayed due to bad weather. Images went viral where dark clouds were seen looming over the stadium. Due to early rain, water got logged on some parts of the ground and some groundstaff were seen sweeping standing water off one of the side covers. England needed seven wickets to win the first Test
Speaking of the match, England batted first and declared their first innings after scoring 393 runs for eight wickets. Then, the Aussies got bundled out for 386 runs in their first inning and thus, going into the second innings, England had a seven-run lead. Then, in their second innings, the home side got bundled out for 273 runs and set a 281-run target for the Aussies to win the series opener. However, at one stage during Australia’s first innings, the visitors were looking favourites to take a lead. But, Ben Stoke’s innovative captaincy and field setups helped England to bounce back and gain a seven-run lead.
The field set-up, he came up with to dismiss Usman Khawaja for 141 runs, was quite innovative and surprising for both fans and former players. While speaking to the Apex Council of Cricket, Ricky Ponting hailed Stokes and said: “I don't think I've ever seen a field like that in Test cricket before. There was just an umbrella of fielders around in front of the batsman's face. And it was all about bowling a couple of slower balls and being able to bowl a yorker. And sure enough, Khawaja used his feet, gave himself some room, gave up his stumps, and the yorker knocked his off stump out of the ground. It's fantastic stuff. It's really refreshing for the Test game to see a team play this way and a captain happy to try everything he possibly can.”
