The 18th match of the ongoing 2023 ODI World Cup qualifiers saw a sensational super-over finish between West Indies and Netherlands on Monday, June 26 at the Takashinga Sports Club, Harare. The Netherlands’ side registered a historic win over the Caribbeans. This was Windies’ second consecutive loss in the qualifiers after getting thrashed by Zimbabwe in their previous match.

Talking about the match, After winning the toss, Scott Edwards, the captain of the Netherlands, decided to bat first. The West Indies batters performed admirably, especially Nicholas Pooran, whose 104 (65) helped the Caribbean team reach an enormous total of 374/6 in 50 overs. Shai Hope (47), Keemo Paul (46), Johnson Charles (54), and Brandon King (76) all made significant contributions as well.

The Netherlands' batting team made a determined effort to overturn the target while chasing it. They managed to tie the score but ultimately fell short by one run after reaching 374/9 in their 50 overs. Teja Nidamanuru played an excellent knock for the Netherlands to keep them in the game (111 in 76 balls). All-rounder Jason Holder of West Indies was effective with the ball, picking up a wicket while only giving up 59 runs in his allotted 10 overs.

However, little did he know that the game will be changed soon as when he came to bowl the super over, he was thrashed by Logan van Beek for 30 runs in the super over. Chasing the target, Windies could only score 8 runs and lost their 2 wickets. Meanwhile, Van Beek talked about the hard work they have put in over the last 18 months in the post-match presentation.

“The culture we've built over the last 18 months. We played a lot of Super League games last year and we were at the other end of the beatings. Nonstop, nonstop, nonstop. The amount of learning this group's had. And to come here, in a crunch time to give ourselves a chance to go to the World Cup is huge. We'll enjoy tonight and then have our sights set on the next match.” Van Beek was quoted by Cricbuzz.
