MS Dhoni is currently in Mumbai after having successful knee surgery. He played the whole IPL 2023 for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) with a knee injury. Still, he managed to lead his team to the triumph and became the joint-most title-winning captain (five times) in IPL history after defeating Gujarat Titans (GT) on 29 May 2023 in the final.

Fleming said: "He (Dhoni) is nursing a knee injury, which you can see in some of his movements, which is hindering him somewhat. But still what you saw is a great player for us. His fitness has always been very professional." Recently, while talking to Cricbuzz, CSK CEO, Kasi Viswanathan said: "He has gone to meet Dr Padriwal and he is prepared to take the surgery route to recover fully for the next season." Dhoni consulted with the same specialist, Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala who is treating Rishabh Pant also. He even consulted with CSK before going to Mumbai and they sent its team physician Dr Madhu Thottappil along with him.

However, after the final, all fans were eager to know whether that would be the last match for him. But, during the post-match presentation, he cleared all the fuss and said: If you circumstantially see, it's the best time to announce the retirement. The easy thing for me to say is thank you and retire. But the hard thing to do is to work hard for nine months and try to play one more IPL season. The body has to hold up. But the amount of love I have received from CSK fans, it would be a gift for them to play one more season. The way they've shown their love and emotion, it's something I need to do for them.”
