Mumbai Indians (MI) took on Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the ongoing IPL on 16 April 2023. MI won their last match against Delhi Capitals (DC). On the other hand, KKR lost their last game against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). So, KKR were looking for a win despite having a very poor head-to-head record against Rohit Sharma and his men.

But, at the toss, fans were in shock to see Suryakumar Yadav as the skipper of MI. He came out for the toss and elected to bowl after winning it. At the toss, Yadav confirmed that Rohit missed the playing XI due to a stomach bug. However, MI also handed debut caps to Arjun Tendulkar and Duan Jansen.

MI defeated KKR by five wickets in IPL 2023

For KKR, Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Narayan Jagadeesan came out to bat. But, Gurbaz scored eight runs and Jagadeesan scored a five-ball duck. Then, Venkatesh Iyer showed some big hitting skills and scored 104 runs off 51 balls, including six fours and nine sixes. Thus, he became the second batter to score a century in the history of KKR in IPL. Before that, only Brendon McCullum scored a century for KKR in 2008. Andre Russel scored 21* runs off 11 balls and KKR posted 185 runs on the board for six wickets in 20 overs. For MI, Hrithik Shokeen took two wickets and the other four bowlers grabbed one wicket each.

In reply, Rohit Sharma came out to bat as an impact player. He replaced Riley Meredith in the team. But, he scored only 20 runs off 13 balls. Then, Ishan Kishan played a fantastic knock as he scored 58 runs off 25 balls, including five fours and five sixes. Then, Suryakumar Yadav scored 43 runs off 25 balls and Tilak Varma scored 30 runs off 25 balls. For KKR, Suyash Sharma had a good game with the ball as he picked up two wickets for 27 runs in four overs. Finally, MI chased down the target in 17.4 overs with five wickets in hand.
