As in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Mumbai Indians (MI) Women’s teams also have a similar rivalry in the Women’s Premier League (WPL). There have been two editions of the WPL thus far, and MI and RCB have each won one title.
Mumbai Indians Women (MIW) is captained by Harmanpreet Kaur and were virtually unbeatable in the first season of the WPL in 2023. They won 6 out of 8 matches in WPL 2023 and qualified for the Eliminator of the tournament. They defeated UP Warriorz in the Eliminator and then beat Delhi Capitals in the WPL 2023 final and won the tournament.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru Women (RCBW), on the other hand, had a very poor outing. In the WPL 2023, they won only 2 matches out of 8 played and didn’t qualify for the playoffs in the tournament.
Mumbai Indians women and Royal Challengers Bengaluru women clashed twice in the WPL 2023, and MIW came out victors in both home and away games.
In WPL 2024, tables turned as the RCB women’s team won 4 out of 8 matches in the tournament to qualify for the Eliminator match. MI Women also won 5 matches out of 8 to qualify for the Eliminator.
The two sides clashed in the league stage twice. The first time they faced off in Bengaluru and thanks to Amelia Kerr’s 40*-run knock, MI registered a 7-wicket win in RCB’s home game. Then, the two sides faced off in Delhi in the second round, and this time RCB women defeated MI Women by 7 wickets, thanks to Ellyse Perry’s knock of 40*.
The two sides also clashed in the Eliminator of the WPL 2024, and in a close encounter, RCB won the match by 5 runs against MI. Ellyse Perry’s 66 took RCB women to 135/6 in Delhi, and despite Harmanpreet Kaur’s valiant 33, MI could only make 130/6 to lose.
RCB women then defeated Delhi Capitals in the WPL 2024 final to win their first T20 trophy.
