Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals have faced each other five times in the history of the Women’s Premier League (WPL). It has been a great rivalry between the two teams that has built up in the last two editions and it will get even more intense with at least two more matches between these sides.
Mumbai Indians have dominated the Delhi Capitals as well in five encounters against them so far. The inaugural champions have won three out of five matches so far against the two-time finalists. The first season of WPL witnessed low-scoring encounters in the league stage with MI winning first and then the Capitals hitting back in the return fixture.
The two teams were among the best in 2023 and they faced yet again in the final that was played at the Brabourn Stadium in the final. Even that clash turned out to be a low-scoring thriller as MI chased down 132 runs in the final over with seven wickets and three balls in hand to lift the trophy.
In the second edition, the Capitals put up a good show at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru posting 171 runs on the board. But the defending champions chased the total down again in th last ball thriller. However, the Delhi side smashed enough runs in the return fixture to win by 29 runs in their next face-off against Hamanpreet Kaur’s team.
Delhi Capitals defended 192 runs restricting the Mumbai side for just 163 runs in their 20 overs. The two teams will be locking horns at least two times even in the upcoming WPL season and they will be keen on gaining an upper hand now.
Both teams will get their campaign underway with the clash against each other on February 15 (Saturday) at 7:30 PM IST at the Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara. The return fixture between Delhi and Mumbai is scheduled to take place at the iconic Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on February 28 (Friday) at 7:30 PM IST.
No wonder the rivalry will reignite yet again over the next month or so and both teams have an equal chance of winning the trophy.
