Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif has stated that the ODI World Cup in 2027 will be Rohit Sharma’s last before he bids adieu to the format and international cricket. He further added that Shubman Gill will take over the captaincy from Rohit.
After the sudden retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma from the longest format of the game, Gill was appointed as the new Test captain, and he stood tall with everyone’s expectations, taking India to a series-levelling scoreline of 2-2 against England in the recently concluded Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
Moreover, with the bat, he shone with 754 runs from 10 innings at an average of 75.4 with three centuries and a double century, proving his mettle both as a batter and as a captain in the longest format of the game.
"In the last three years, Gill has scored 2,000 runs. He is the future captain. He is the Test captain, and in T20Is, he is the vice-captain. Rohit is the ODI captain. He is almost 38 and I believe will retire after the 2027 ODI World Cup. When he steps away, Gill will become the captain,” Kaif told on his YouTube channel.
After announcing the Asia Cup 2025 squad, Indian chief selector Ajit Agarkar has stated that his team has seen some leadership qualities in Gill, and he exceeded all of their expectations with the kind of form he has shown with the willow on English soil.
"We obviously see some leadership qualities in him. And his form in England was what we were hoping for. He exceeded all our expectations with the kind of form that he showed with his bat, which is a great sign when there is so much pressure on you as a captain," Agarkar said while speaking to the reporters.
Speaking about Gill’s numbers in the shortest format of the game, he has accumulated 578 runs from 21 T20I innings at an average of 30.42 and a strike rate of 139.27 with a century and three half-centuries.
