Day Five of the Manchester Test began with India trailing by 137 runs, eight wickets in hand, and overnight batters Shubman Gill and KL Rahul well set at the crease. For England, the big question was whether captain Ben Stokes, nursing injury concerns, would bowl.
But it was Stokes himself who took the ball at one end and delivered the crucial breakthrough by dismissing KL Rahul for 90. That wicket ended a gritty 188-run stand for the third wicket between Rahul and Gill.
India then promoted Washington Sundar to join skipper Shubman Gill at the crease. Gill, continuing his fine form, showed immense fight and composure to bring up another century in the series—scoring 103 off 238 deliveries.
At lunch, India were 223/4, with Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja at the crease. With pressure mounting, a tricky afternoon session was expected. However, both all-rounders batted with discipline and flair. India not only avoided losing a wicket in that session but also scored 99 runs, with both batters reaching their fifties. They eventually took India into the lead, steering the visitors away from an innings defeat and closer to a memorable draw.
Ben Stokes was named the Player of the Match for his all-round brilliance
In the final session, Washington and Jadeja continued to dominate. As both approached their respective centuries, England’s players were seen suggesting a handshake to conclude the match. But India denied, wanting their batters to complete their milestones. The move left some England players visibly frustrated.
Jadeja eventually brought up his second Test century in England, while Washington Sundar celebrated his maiden Test ton. Only after both players reached their three-figure marks did India and England agree to shake hands, officially ending the match in a draw.
Jadeja (107*) and Sundar (101*) shared an unbeaten 203-run partnership for the fifth wicket. From being 0/2 in the very first over to finishing at 425/4, it was a remarkable show of grit, application, and resilience from the Indian batters.
With the final Test set to take place at The Oval, England lead the five-match series 2-1 while India will now aim to level the series.
