Team India registered a historic win at Edgbaston on day five of the second Test, defeating England by a massive 336 runs to level the ongoing five-match Test series 1-1. After losing the series opener at Leeds, India bounced back in style, setting the stage for an exciting remainder of the series with three matches still to play.
At the start of day five, the equation was clear—India needed seven wickets, while England faced the improbable task of chasing down 536 runs. After a delayed start, due to rain, all eyes were on the overnight batters Harry Brook and Ollie Pope, but Akash Deep struck early, removing both within the opening session and reducing England to 83/5.
Skipper Ben Stokes and wicketkeeper Jamie Smith tried to stabilise the innings, stitching a 70-run partnership for the sixth wicket. However, just before lunch, Washington Sundar delivered a crucial breakthrough by dismissing Stokes, tightening India’s grip on the game.
Shubman Gill was named the Player of the Match
After the break, Chris Woakes fell for just seven, but Brydon Carse chipped in with a useful 38. Shoaib Bashir remained unbeaten on 12, while Smith stood out with a resilient 88. Eventually, England were bowled out for 271, handing India a famous win—their first-ever Test victory at Edgbaston in nine attempts. Previously, they had lost seven and drawn one at this venue.
Akash Deep emerged as the star with the ball, claiming a six-wicket haul in the second innings and a match total of 10 wickets (4 in the first innings, 6 in the second). He became only the second Indian bowler after Chetan Sharma in 1986 to take a 10-wicket match haul at Edgbaston.
This 336-run triumph is now India’s biggest Test win in England and also their largest margin of victory in SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia), surpassing the previous best of a 295-run win in Perth in 2024.
Skipper Shubman Gill was named Player of the Match for his outstanding contributions with the bat, scoring 269 in the first innings and 161 in the second.
With the series now levelled, both teams will shift their focus to the third Test, which begins on 10 July at Lord’s, where India will aim to carry forward their momentum, while England look to bounce back.
