England skipper Ben Stokes and Liam Dawson resumed their innings on Day 4 at 544/7. Jasprit Bumrah gave India a much-needed breakthrough early, removing Dawson for 26. But England kept going as Stokes and Brydon Carse built a strong 105-run stand for the ninth wicket.

Stokes played a captain’s knock, reaching his century and eventually getting out for 141, falling just nine runs short of 150. Carse gave good support, scoring a quick 47 off 54 balls with aggressive strokes. England were eventually bowled out for a massive 669, securing a dominant lead of 311 runs.

The innings break came just before Lunch, leaving India to bat for three overs before the session ended. Those few minutes turned into a nightmare. Both Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan were dismissed for ducks, leaving India at 0/2 without a single run on the board. Both wickets were taken by Chris Woakes.

India still trail by 137 runs with eight wickets in hand

KL Rahul and captain Shubman Gill then took over and faced a tough period with the new ball, charged-up England bowlers, and the weight of a massive deficit. At Lunch, India were 1/2 under huge pressure with two new batters at the crease.

However, the second session brought hope. Gill and Rahul absorbed the pressure and played with grit and determination. They batted the entire session without losing a wicket and added 85 runs unbeaten in 26 overs. Gill led from the front, bringing up yet another fifty on this tour, while Rahul gave him solid support.

In the final session, the duo continued to play smartly. They kept the scoreboard ticking and avoided risks. Their unbeaten 174-run stand carried India to 174/2 at stumps. Gill remained not out on 78, and Rahul was unbeaten on 87. The duo completely frustrated England’s bowlers, who had looked threatening at one stage but went wicketless in the last two sessions.

As the match heads into Day 5, India still trail by 137 runs. The first goal will be to wipe out the deficit. For England, picking up quick wickets will be crucial, as this ongoing partnership has looked a bit threatening.
