What happened on Day 4 of England vs India, 2nd Test? All you need to know

India continued their dominance on Day Four of the ongoing Test at Edgbaston, piling on a huge second-innings score before striking early with the ball. India began the day with KL Rahul and Karun Nair at the crease. Both batters looked solid early on.

However, Nair fell for 26 off 46 balls, once again failing to convert a start. Rahul went on to score a composed 55 off 84 before being dismissed. After Rahul’s wicket, Rishabh Pant joined Shubman Gill in the middle. The pair played aggressively, adding a quick 110-run partnership off just 103 balls for the fourth wicket.

Pant smashed an entertaining 65 off 58 balls, hitting eight fours and three sixes. During his knock, he set a unique record — most sixes hit by a batter in Test matches in an away country. Pant now has 24 sixes in England, surpassing Ben Stokes’ previous best of 21 in South Africa.

Shubman Gill’s rich vein of form continued as he brought up yet another century, eventually scoring 161 runs. Along with Ravindra Jadeja, who remained unbeaten on 69 off 118 balls, Gill added 175 runs off 208 balls for the fifth wicket.

Gill ended the Test with 430 runs across two innings (269 & 161) — the second-highest aggregate by any batter in a Test match. He also became only the second Indian to score a double hundred and a century in the same Test.

With Washington Sundar chipping in with an unbeaten 12 off 7, India declared at 427/6, setting England a towering target of 608 runs.

For England, Shoaib Bashir and Josh Tongue took two wickets each, while Brydon Carse and Joe Root picked up one apiece.

Early wickets dent England’s chase

England’s reply began on a shaky note. Mohammed Siraj removed Zak Crawley for a duck. Soon after, Akash Deep bowled a beauty to dismiss Ben Duckett for 25.

He struck again to dismiss Joe Root, knocking over his stumps and reducing England to 50/3. At stumps on Day Four, England were 72/3 in 16 overs, with Harry Brook and Ollie Pope unbeaten at the crease.

As the match heads into Day Five, England need 536 runs to win, while India require just seven more wickets to seal a memorable victory at Edgbaston.
