With a lead of 96 runs and eight wickets in hand, India’s two overnight batters, KL Rahul and skipper Shubman Gill, began the proceedings on day four of the ongoing Leeds Test. However, Gill failed to deliver and was dismissed for just eight runs.
At 92/3, things looked a bit uncertain. Then came Rishabh Pant. The wicketkeeper-batter and Rahul stitched together a 195-run partnership for the fourth wicket and completely shifted the momentum towards India.
Pant scored 118 off 140 balls, including 15 fours and three sixes. He became the only Indian wicketkeeper-batter to score centuries in both innings of a Test match. Rahul showed great patience throughout his innings. He left the good balls and punished the loose ones. He eventually got out for 137 off 247 balls.
But just like in the first innings, India suffered another batting collapse. Karun Nair had another disappointing outing on his comeback. He scored 20 off 54 balls before getting out softly. The visitors lost their last six wickets for just 31 runs. In the first innings, they had lost their last seven wickets for only 41 runs.
England batted for just six overs on Day 4
At one point, India looked set to post a target of over 400 or even 450. But ultimately, they were bundled out for 364 in 96 overs, setting England a target of 371 runs. Still, Ravindra Jadeja’s unbeaten 25 off 40 balls could prove crucial in the context of the game. His knock helped India reach 364. Without it, things could have been worse.
For England, both Josh Tongue and Brydon Carse picked up three wickets each. Shoaib Bashir took two, while Ben Stokes and Chris Woakes claimed one apiece.
While chasing 371, Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett safely played out three overs from Jasprit Bumrah, two from Mohammed Siraj, and one from Ravindra Jadeja. They ended the day on 21/0 in six overs.
So, on the final day of the match, England need 350 runs, while India will be aiming to take 10 wickets. Both Crawley and Duckett will begin the proceedings on day five.
