Day 3 of the ongoing Leeds Test between England and India produced another thrilling contest, with the momentum swinging back and forth throughout the day.
England resumed their first innings on 209/3, with Ollie Pope unbeaten on a century and Harry Brook at the crease. India struck early as Pope was dismissed for 106. Captain Ben Stokes looked steady for a while but fell for 20 off 52 balls. Then, Harry Brook and wicketkeeper Jamie Smith added 73 runs for the sixth wicket before Smith was dismissed for 40 off 52.
Brook continued to play an aggressive knock, riding his luck with a few close chances. He formed another valuable 49-run stand with Chris Woakes. But in a heartbreaking moment, Brook missed out on a deserved century by just one run, falling for 99 while attempting a hook shot off Prasidh Krishna.
His disappointment was visible as he walked back after a fine innings that took England close to India’s total. England’s tailenders made key contributions — Woakes scored 38, Brydon Carse added 22, and Josh Tongue chipped in with 11. Eventually, England were bowled out for 465 in 100.4 overs, trailing by just six runs.
India finished Day 3, leading by 96 runs with eight wickets in hand
For India, Jasprit Bumrah led the charge with a brilliant five-wicket haul — his third in England and 14th overall in Tests. He once again showed why he is a standout bowler in any condition. Krishna picked up three wickets, while Mohammed Siraj took two.
In reply, India suffered an early blow as Yashasvi Jaiswal, one of the centurions from the first innings, was dismissed for just four. Sai Sudharsan came in at No. 3 and looked promising during his 30-run knock, but his soft dismissal was disappointing and avoidable.
KL Rahul and Shubman Gill then steadied the innings. Rahul looked in control and remained unbeaten on 47, while Gill was not out on six when rain interrupted play late in the day. With stumps called due to rain, India ended Day 3 at 90/2 in 23.5 overs, leading by 96 runs with eight wickets in hand.
