What happened on Day 2 of England vs India, 3rd Test? All you need to know

England began day two of the ongoing Lord’s Test against India with 251/4 on the board. Joe Root and Ben Stokes, the two overnight batters, were at the crease. Root went on to complete his century, and the fifth-wicket partnership between him and Stokes was starting to look dangerous.

But the stand ended at 88 runs when Jasprit Bumrah bowled an absolute jaffer to rattle Stokes' stumps. Then, Bumrah followed it up with Root’s wicket and on the very next ball, he dismissed Chris Woakes for a golden duck. Suddenly, the momentum shifted completely towards the visitors, with England reduced to 271/7.

However, England bounced back thanks to fifties from their star wicketkeeper Jamie Smith and Brydon Carse. Smith scored 51 off 56 balls, while Carse made 56 off 83. Eventually, England were bowled out for 387 in 112.3 overs.

For India, Bumrah earned a spot on the Lord’s Honours Board with a five-wicket haul. Mohammed Siraj and Nitish Kumar Reddy picked up two wickets each, while Ravindra Jadeja chipped in with one.

In reply, India had a shaky start. Yashasvi Jaiswal was dismissed for 13. Jofra Archer, making a comeback in red-ball cricket, showed how raw pace and accuracy can trouble any batter. Jaiswal’s dismissal was a perfect example.

Karun Nair came in at number three and joined KL Rahul in the middle. The pair looked calm and added 61 runs for the second wicket. Nair worked hard, faced 62 balls, and scored 40. He looked settled but once again failed to convert his start into a big score. His stay ended with a brilliant catch by Root, marking another missed opportunity for him on this tour.

Captain Shubman Gill came in next but managed only 16 runs. All eyes were on Rishabh Pant and whether he would bat, considering the injury he suffered on his little finger on day one. Pant did come out to bat and remained not out on 19 at stumps.

KL Rahul showed great resilience and remained unbeaten on 53. India ended day two at 145/3, trailing by 242 runs. For England, Stokes, Woakes, and Archer picked up one wicket each.
