The second day of the Edgbaston Test began with overnight batters Shubman Gill and Ravindra Jadeja at the crease. The Indian skipper and veteran all-rounder picked up from where they left off on Day 1, continuing to play fluent shots and frustrate the England bowlers.

The hosts struggled to find a breakthrough as their bowling lacked bite. Gill soon reached the 150-run mark, while Jadeja brought up his fifty.

The partnership between Gill and Jadeja flourished, adding a massive 203 runs for the sixth wicket. However, Jadeja fell just short of a well-deserved century. He was dismissed for 89 off 137 balls.

Washington Sundar then joined Gill at the crease. Picked for his all-round skills, Sundar made a valuable contribution with the bat. He scored 42 runs off 103 balls and supported Gill in a 144-run stand for the seventh wicket.

During this stand, Gill reached his maiden double century in Test cricket. He became the first Indian captain to score a double hundred in a Test match in England, and only the third Indian batter overall to do so in the country.

England struggled early in reply

Gill didn’t stop there. He passed the 250-mark and remained unbeaten on 265 at Tea, with India at 564/7. He looked set for a triple century, but his marathon innings came to an end shortly after on 269 off 387 balls, with 30 fours and 3 sixes.

After Gill’s dismissal, the lower-order batters couldn’t add much. India were eventually bowled out for 587 in 151 overs. For England, Shoaib Bashir picked up 3 wickets. Chris Woakes and Josh Tongue claimed 2 each, while Ben Stokes, Joe Root, and Brydon Carse took one apiece.

England got off to a poor start in their first innings. Both openers Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope were dismissed for ducks. Akash Deep struck early to remove them, and Mohammed Siraj added to the damage by dismissing Zak Crawley for 19.

England were reduced to 25/3 in just 7.1 overs. However, Joe Root and Harry Brook steadied the innings with an unbeaten 52-run stand for the fourth wicket.

At stumps on Day 2, England were 77/3 after 20 overs, still trailing by 510 runs. On Day 3, Root and Brook will resume England’s innings, while India’s bowlers will look to strike early.
