Team India began day two of the ongoing Leeds Test on a strong note, with overnight batters — captain Shubman Gill and vice-captain Rishabh Pant — continuing their dominance from day one. Pant went on to complete his century, marking his third Test hundred in England. With this knock, he also became the Indian wicketkeeper with the most Test centuries (7), surpassing MS Dhoni’s tally of six.
Their fourth-wicket stand crossed the 200-run mark, and India looked poised to post a massive total, with plenty of batting still to come. However, against the run of play, Gill fell for 147 while attempting a cross-batted shot against Shoaib Bashir. Josh Tongue took a simple catch, ending a brilliant 209-run partnership.
What followed was a sudden and dramatic collapse. From a commanding 430/3, India lost their final seven wickets for just 41 runs, getting bowled out for 471 in 113 overs as the lower-order batters crumbled quickly. Karun Nair, making his return to the Indian Test side after impressive domestic performances and practice match form, was dismissed for a four-ball duck.
Pant was the next to fall, departing for a well-made 134. After that, none of the remaining batters, including Ravindra Jadeja, offered much resistance, contributing just 16 more runs to the total.
Jasprit Bumrah took all three wickets on day two
For England, it was a spirited comeback with the ball after a tough opening day. With helpful overcast conditions, the bowlers hit the right areas, swung the ball, and capitalised on the momentum shift. Ben Stokes and Josh Tongue led the charge, picking up four wickets each.
England’s reply began with a delay due to rain. But once play resumed, India made an immediate impact. Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Zak Crawley for just four runs. However, Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope steadied the innings with a 122-run partnership for the second wicket.
Bumrah returned to break the stand, getting Duckett out for 62 off 94 deliveries. Ollie Pope continued to score freely and reached his century, finishing unbeaten at the end of the day. Just when it looked like England would close the day without further loss, Bumrah struck again, removing Joe Root with a superb delivery.
It was the 10th time Bumrah dismissed Root in Tests. He almost had Harry Brook as well with a sharp bouncer, but the dismissal was overturned due to a no-ball after replays showed he had overstepped. At stumps on day two, England were 209/3 in 49 overs, trailing India by 262 runs.
