India finished Day 1 of the ongoing fourth Test against England at 264/4 in 83 overs at Old Trafford, Manchester. After being asked to bat first, the visitors got off to a solid start, thanks to openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul.
Rahul looked set for a big score, playing some eye-catching strokes. However, he fell just four runs short of his fifty, getting out for 46. He and Jaiswal added 94 runs for the first wicket in 30 overs.
At No. 3, it was a return to the playing XI for young Sai Sudharsan. The left-hander had made his debut in Leeds earlier in the series but was dropped afterwards. He replaced Karun Nair in this Test, as Nair had failed to impress in his three outings. Sudharsan justified his selection to an extent, scoring 61 off 151 balls. It wasn’t the most fluent knock, but his grit and determination stood out and left many impressed.
Meanwhile, Jaiswal reached his fifty but was dismissed soon after for 58 by Liam Dawson, who is playing his first Test since 2017. India’s momentum took a hit when skipper Shubman Gill was dismissed for 12 off 23 by his opposite number, Ben Stokes. From a strong position at 94/0, India slipped to 140/3.
Rishabh Pant retired hurt on 37
Sudharsan then found support from Rishabh Pant. The pair looked steady before an unfortunate injury forced Pant to leave the field. At 212/3, Pant attempted a reverse sweep to a yorker-length delivery from Chris Woakes. He failed to make clean contact, and the ball hit his boots. England appealed for LBW and went for a review, but UltraEdge confirmed a clear under-edge before the ball struck the boots. Though Pant was given not out and remained unbeaten on 37, he was in visible pain.
He struggled to stand and was eventually helped off the field using a golf-style buggy. After initial treatment from the Indian medical staff, he was taken to the ground’s medical facility and then to the hospital for scans.
Ravindra Jadeja came in and batted cautiously. By stumps, Jadeja was not out on 19. Alongside him was Shardul Thakur, who was picked in the playing XI in place of the injured Nitish Kumar Reddy. Thakur also remained unbeaten on 19.
