A strong end to Day 1 for India in the second Test against England at Edgbaston, Birmingham. After being put in to bat, the visitors posted 310/5 in 85 overs. Skipper Shubman Gill led from the front with a fine century, helping India recover from mid-innings trouble.

England captain Ben Stokes won the toss and chose to bowl first. His bowlers made early use of the overcast conditions. Chris Woakes gave England the perfect start by dismissing KL Rahul for just two.

India made three changes from the Leeds Test. Washington Sundar, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Akash Deep came in for Sai Sudharsan, Shardul Thakur, and Jasprit Bumrah. Despite playing his debut Test in Leeds, Sudharsan was left out, and Karun Nair was brought in at No. 3.

Nair looked solid early but failed to convert his start. He scored 31 off 50 before getting out. However, he and Yashasvi Jaiswal added a steady 80 runs for the second wicket.

Back-to-back Test centuries for Shubman Gill as captain

After Nair’s dismissal, Shubman Gill walked in and looked in control right from the beginning. He and Jaiswal added 66 runs for the third wicket. Jaiswal once again impressed but missed out on a century, falling for 87 off 107 balls.

Rishabh Pant chipped in with a 25-run knock but couldn’t push on. Soon after, Nitish Kumar Reddy’s return to the side didn’t go as planned. He was bowled by Woakes for just 1. At 211/5, India were in a tricky position. But Gill stayed calm and stitched a valuable 99-run unbroken stand with Ravindra Jadeja for the sixth wicket.

Gill remained unbeaten on 114 off 216 balls at stumps. It was his second straight century in the series and his first as captain at Edgbaston. He also became only the fifth Indian batter to score a Test ton at this venue. Jadeja supported him well with an unbeaten 41 off 67 deliveries.

For England, Woakes was the pick of the bowlers with 2/50. Brydon Carse, Ben Stokes, and Shoaib Bashir took one wicket each. India will look to build further on Day 2 with a strong platform already in place.
