West Indies cricket doesn’t need world cricket, world cricket needs West Indies cricket: Gautam Gambhir

Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir has delivered an inspirational speech in the West Indies dressing room after India’s 2-0 Test series win over their opposition at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Tuesday, October 14.

In a video shared by the BCCI on its social platforms, Gambhir could be seen praising the West Indies batters for putting up an exceptional show with the willow in the second innings after India enforced follow-on.

While the West Indies got all out for 248 runs in 81.5 overs in the first innings, they had put up an exceptional show in the second innings, following on, scoring 390 runs in 118.5 overs to set a target for Team India in the fourth innings.

“I think the way you played in the second innings of this Test match is probably the template that can truly take West Indies cricket forward, the way you all fought, from 1 to 11. For me, in a team sport, the most important thing is that every contribution needs to be appreciated. It's easy sometimes to focus only on the centuries and five-wicket hauls. But the players who are scoring hundreds and taking five-fors usually don’t need as much support from the coaches or support staff. It’s the small contributions that really make the team. Big contributions only make the headlines,” said Gambhir in a video shared by the BCCI.

“And lastly, guys, I want to say one thing, something I’ve always believed in West Indies cricket doesn’t need world cricket. World cricket needs West Indies cricket. Remember that. A strong, solid Test team is the foundation of a great cricketing nation. It’s not the other way around. So when you wear that jersey, understand that you have the opportunity to do something truly special, it's something that not many players in the T20 circuit will ever get the chance to do,” he added.
