Ravichandran Ashwin wreaked havoc for West Indies on his Test return with a five-wicket haul. By dismissing the two Windies openers, he was the one who gave India the breakthrough in the game. Alick Athanaze of the West Indies, who scored 47 off 99, was also one of the victims. He also added the wickets of Alzarri Joseph and Jomel Warrican to his tally later on.
Earlier, West Indies had chosen to bat first after winning the toss. However, the decision did not quite work out in their favour as the visitors were able to bundle them out for 150 runs within 65 overs. While Ashwin scalped five, his spin-twin Ravindra Jadeja contributed with three wickets. He scalped Jermaine Blackwood, Joshua Da Silva, and Kemar Roach. The remaining two wickets were scalped one each by Shardul Thakur and Mohammed Siraj.
‘Jaiswal is a vibrant cricketer, extremely talented’ – Ravichandran Ashwin
In reply, India got off to a strong start with debutant Yashasvi Jaiswal approaching a half-century. He was deployed to start the inning alongside the captain, Rohit Sharma. At stumps on Day 1, the pair accumulated 80 runs in 23 overs. Jaiswal is currently at 40* from 73 balls while the captain is at 30* off 65. Speaking of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ravichandran Ashwin was full of hope and expectations from the youngster. He said, "Jaiswal is a vibrant cricketer, extremely talented. I hope he goes on to do great things in his career. I think we're going to see some special performances from him."
After finishing as the key man on Day 1 of the first Test, Ashwin also opened up about his performance that broke several records. He became the first Indian bowler to scalp father and son in Tests. Moreover, he also reached 700 Test wickets besides breaking Anil Kumble’s record to become the Indian bowler with the most bowled wickets.
“Thought it was a pretty good performance. There was a bit of moisture on the pitch earlier but it started to spin later. Saw on the TV as well that it turned more later. Had to adapt early. It was a bit dry, have to get the pace right to trouble the batsmen. International cricket is all about adapting to different conditions. With so many leagues around, we can get carried away with a few performances in these leagues but international cricket is different,” Ashwin said.
