Earlier in the game, Mumbai managed to bundle Chennai for just 97. Barring MS Dhoni, none of Chennai's batters really looked comfortable. With just 98 to chase in the second innings, the fans felt that the Mumbai-based franchise would get to their target with ease. However, it wasn't a straightforward victory for the five-time champions as Chennai's new-ball bowlers were simply sensational. They made a game out of nothing as they picked four wickets in the first six overs.

Thus, the pressure was on Mumbai's batters. Amidst all the tension, the fans witnessed an absolutely hilarious moment which featured the on-field umpire. The sixth over of the second innings saw the umpire getting confused. During the third ball of the over, Hrithik Shokeen missed a flick, and the keeper-batter MS Dhoni caught the ball. However, the ball did hit the batter as there was some noise heard. Thus, the entire team started to appeal for a caught-behind.

They felt that the ball made contact with the bat. As a matter of fact, Simarjeet Singh, who was bowling the over, was literally seen pleading to the umpire to give it out. On the other hand, the umpire hilariously changed his decision. He spread both his hands to give it a wide, only to quickly raise his finger. Thus, he gave it out. His sudden decision to give it out was baffling. Nevertheless, Shokeen reviewed it immediately.

The replays showed that the ball brushed his pads. Thus, the decision was then reversed, and the batter was given not out. Shokeen scored a 23-ball 18 before being dismissed in the 13th over. However, Mumbai went on to chase their target with 31 balls to spare. Thus, they won their third game of this edition.

In the process, they also knocked Chennai out of the tournament. As for the four-time champions, this was their eighth loss in 12 games.
