An unbelievable and bizarre incident took place on Day 3 of the ongoing fourth Ashes Test match between Australia and England in Sydney. All-rounder Ben Stokes saw the funny side of the things, but the Australian fielders were left in disbelief.

Australia all-rounder Cameron Green bowled a beautiful delivery to which Stokes shouldered arms. The ball came back in with the angle and hit the off stump on his way to the keeper. The umpire though thought the ball has hit Stokes' pad and gave him out. Turns out, the ball did not come in contact with the all-rounder's pads and only hit the stumps along the way. Since the bails didn't fell, Stokes survived a close shave.

Legendary Australia cricketer Shane Warne was shocked by umpire Paul Reiffel’s verdict. " What‘s he given it out on? How bizarre was that?” Warne said. “Paul Reiffel was a bowler and he‘s seen it hit the stumps and said, ’you’re out. That‘s one of the most bizarre things I’ve seen given out, for the ball hitting the stumps and the bails didn’t come off … I‘m sorry, I’m still in shock. I’m still not sure what we just saw,” he added.

Sachin Tendulkar was also bemused by the Stokes' incident and took to Twitter to share his thoughts. Tendulkar asked if there should be a law where a batter can be given out if the ball hit the stumps but bails didn't fell. “Should a law be introduced called ‘hitting the stumps’ after the ball has hit them but not dislodged the bails? What do you think guys? Let’s be fair to bowlers! @shanewarne," he tweeted.

Meanwhile, Stokes was dismissed for 66 by Nathan Lyon. The southpaw though managed to stitch a valuable partnership with Jonny Bairstow and enabled England to avoid the follow-on.
