In the seventh match of the ongoing 12th season of the Big Bash League, Melbourne Renegades defeated Sydney Thunder by four wickets thanks to a solid foundation laid by captain Nic Maddinson. Although Thunder pacer Gurinder Sandhu made an early breakthrough by dismissing Renegades wicket-keeper batter Sam Harper in the first over, Maddinson was the pinnacle of their batting in the first half before Aaron Finch took centre stage at Docklands Stadium.
Maddinson, who hit three of the 14 sixes in BBL 12 Match 8, hit the longest in the eighth over. Maddinson hit Thunder spinner Chris Green for a 101-metre six after barely surviving the previous delivery. The left-handed batter sat down on one knee before thwacking the off-spinner through the mid-wicket region for a monstrous shot with a slog.

On Sunday night, the 30-year-old player was his team's second-best batter, scoring 39 (28) runs at a strike rate of 139.28. Finch hit a match-winning 70* (43) with seven fours and two sixes in his 74th T20 and 23rd BBL half-century. He hit Sandhu for a six before running a couple of runs twice to seal a 175-run chase with a ball to spare.
Finch opened about the six he hit in the final over that sealed the game for Melbourne in the post match interview. He revealed that he read the line of the bowler earlier based on the field placement. "I was thinking of hitting one six in the last over, got lucky there. Made sure we get over the line pretty stress-free in the end. Sometimes you can read what the bowler is going to bowl depending on the field," he said.
Melbourne has started their BBL 2022-23 season with a couple of victories, putting them in second place on the points table in a rare occurrence. Those who have followed Renegades over the last three seasons understand the significance of a strong start. The Renegades will face Hobart Heat in their next match on the 21st of December.
