The first ODI of the three-match series between India and South Africa finally got underway at Lucknow after the rain delay early on. The match was reduced to 40 overs per side as Indian captain Shikhar Dhawan won the toss and chose to bowl first. The Indian bowlers were on song early on making the ball dance to their tunes. Wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav also had a great outing in the middle as the pitch assisted him with some turn.

Temba Bavuma's side made a decent start to their batting innings before Shardul Thakur opened the floodgates for India with two quick wickets of Janneman Malan and Temba Bavuma. Kuldeep Yadav got the third wicket for India as he sent Aiden Markram packing with an unplayable delivery.

David Miller, who has been in sublime form since the beginning of the year, hit Kuldeep for a boundary on the first ball of the 24th over, employing a sweep shot. The wrist-spinner replied an absolute jaffa in response to the boundary and had a few things to say to Miller while he ran towards the non-striker's end to steal a couple of runs.

After losing four wickets for 110 in 22.2 overs, Heinrich Klaseen and David Miller stitched a magnificent 139-run partnership to take their team to a total of 249 at the end of their 40 overs. Klaseen remained unbeaten on 74 off 65 balls with six boundaries and two sixes while Miller remained unbeaten on 75 off 63 balls smashing five fours and three sixes.

Shardul Thakur picked up two wickets while Ravi Bishnoi and Kuldeep Yadav picked one wicket each. India's chase got off to a miserable start as they lost captain Shikhar Dhawan and Shubman Gill early on in their innings.

Gill was cleaned up by Wayne Parnell returning to the pavilion after scoring three off seven balls. Dhawan’s stumps were rattled by Kagiso Rabada, who was also breathing fire early on. Indian hopes are pinned on Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ishan Kishan who are battling with the South Africa storm to take their team home in the first ODI.
