While cricketers generally get the loudest cheers, it was a spectator who managed to get all the applause after taking an absolute blinder of a catch. This occurred during a Super Smash game between Wellington and Auckland, at the Basin Reserve on Friday.

In the second innings, during the first ball of the 18th over, Auckland's star pacer Lockie Ferguson decided to go for a fuller length delivery to the Wellington captain Michael Bracewell, who shuffled towards the off-side and ramped the ball over the fine-leg boundary for a maximum.

While the ball sailed magnificently into the crowd, a spectator correctly placed himself under the ball. Despite juggling it twice, he managed to catch the ball in the third attempt and completed a wonderful catch.

The fact that someone from the audience was able to successfully hold on to a tough catch like this, despite fumbling, was ridiculously unbelievable. This led to a loud cheer amongst the crowd. Even the commentators couldn't believe it.

"Taken on the back, that's a beauty. Third time in three grabs. Can't believe that he has taken one," said the commentator on air. However, Bracewell's efforts went in vain as his side went on to lose the game. As a matter of fact, the 30-year-old played a lone warrior knock. Barring him, none of the other batters from his side stood up.

After winning the toss and electing to bat first, the ODonnell-led side, owing to an amazing 55 by Mark Chapman, ended up scoring 134. This score proved to be enough as, despite an unbeaten 58 by their skipper, Wellington ended up scoring only 121 and thus lost by 13 runs. Ben Lister and Adithya Ashok were the stars with the ball as both of them went on to pick three wickets each.
