Teenage sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who made waves for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL 2025 and for India U19 recently, has been named the vice-captain of the Bihar team for the upcoming Ranji Trophy 2025-26 tournament. This despite the fact Suryavanshi is still 14 years of age.

Batter Sakibul Gani will captain the side, with Suryavanshi set to play an important supporting role at the start of the domestic season.

This decision follows Suryavanshi's outstanding junior cricket performances and shows the Bihar Cricket Association's reaction to recent administrative changes. Bihar Cricket Association (BCA) had to make a late scramble to appoint a selector, on an ad hoc basis, to join a two-member panel following a BCCI order.

Suryavanshi's promotion came after a strong run of form for India Under-19 during the tour of Australia, where he contributed quick starts up top. He scored a 78-ball century in the opening four-day match in Brisbane and concluded the multi-day series as the second-highest run-scorer, hitting 133 runs in three innings to help India win 2-0.

Suryavanshi had previously been among the runs in England, scoring 143, the quickest century in young one-dayers, at Worcester in July. In five matches, he scored 355 runs with a strike rate of 174.01, comfortably ending as the series' leading run-getter.

Suryavanshi, 14, has played just five first-class games since debuting in January 2024 at 12 years and 284 days but has aggregated just 100 runs in ten innings, with a best of 41. Suryavanshi is unlikely to feature in the entire Ranji season as he's also in the running for a berth in India's squad for the Under-19 World Cup in early 2026.

Bihar had a challenging 2024–25 Ranji Trophy campaign, earning just one point and not a single victory. The association is pursuing a combination of new leadership and young potential as a result of the relegation to the Plate League.
