4 March 2023 was a historical day in India’s Women’s cricket history as the inaugural season of the Women’s T20 League kicked off in Mumbai. The Mumbai franchise took on Gujarat in the tournament opener at the D.Y.Patil stadium. However, Harmanpreet Kaur made a winning start to the tournament as they defeated Gujarat by a huge margin of 143 runs.

Team India's skipper also won the player of the match award. But, a funny incident took place during Gujarat’s innings when Harmanpreet Kaur went for a DRS over a wide call from the umpire. Fans went crazy as it was quite unknown to many of them that teams have the flexibility to take DRS even against no-balls and wides in this tournament.

Mumbai crushed Gujarat in the opening match of the Women’s T20 League

The incident took place during the 13th over of Gujarat’s innings when Saika Ishaque was bowling. On the last delivery of that over, the ball went down the leg side while the batter was looking for a pull shot. Umpire called for a wide but the batter claimed that the ball hit her bat. Then, Harmanpreet Kaur was seen taking DRS against that call and replays confirmed that the ball hit the batter’s gloves. Thus, the umpire overturned the decision and the fielding captain shared a laugh with the umpire.

But, seeing that, fans came up with some funny tweets and they claimed that the Mumbai franchise had fixed the match. Speaking of the match, Mumbai batted first and scored 207 runs for five wickets. Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur was the main star as she scored 65 runs off 30 balls, including 14 fours.

Hayley Matthews scored 47 runs off 31 balls and Amelia Kerr scored 45* runs off 24 balls. In reply, the Gujarat batters failed miserably as they managed only to score 64 runs in 15.1 overs. Saika Ishaque impressed everyone as she picked up four wickets for 11 runs in 3.1 overs.

Here is how fans have trolled Mumbai for taking DRS to overturn a wide call from the on-field umpire:
