'U-19 to Senior team, the journey continues' - Fans react as U-19 teammates Shubman Gill and Shivam Mavi make their T20I debut together for India

India and Sri Lanka are locking horns in the first of the three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka. The visitors’ skipper Dasun Shanaka won the toss and asked the Indian team to bat first at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Notably, it is the first bilateral international assignment for the men in blue in this calendar year of 2023.

During the opening fixture of the T20I series against Sri Lanka, the moment that caught the eyeballs of the Indian cricket fans was the one when opening batter Shubman Gill and young pacer Shivam Mavi were handed over their debut T20I caps.

Notably, both the youngsters were also teammates in the Indian under-19 team and now they have made their international debut together. This interesting journey of Shivam and Shubman has also drawn various reactions from a section of Indian cricket fans.

They took to Twitter to lavish praises on both the youngsters and also expressed hope of Shubman’s purple patch in the T20I cricket as well after some good outings in the ODI and Test cricket.

Speaking of the ongoing first T20I between India and Sri Lanka so far, the hosts have posted a decent total of 162 runs for the loss of five wickets in the allotted 20 overs courtesy of the brilliant 68-run stand between Deepak Hooda and Axar Patel. The former ended up being the highest run-scorer of the Indian innings with a knock of 41 runs off just 23 balls with a boundary four sixes to his name.

Axar Patel also contributed with crucial 31 runs off 20 balls with three boundaries and a six on his credit. Earlier, the young sensational opener Ishan started them in a style with a knock of 37 runs off 29 balls with three boundaries and two sixes with his willow.

Now, the Islanders require 163 runs to win in the 20 overs to take a lead of 1-0 in the three-match T20I series against the men in blue.
