Sunrisers Hyderabad didn’t get off to a desired start in IPL 2021 as they were humbled by Eoin Morgan’s Kolkata Knight Riders by 10 runs in their tournament opener. While SRH’s playing XI was pretty much the same that was expected, Kane Williamson’s omission from the team left SRH fans baffled as the Kiwi skipper is one of the best batsmen going around. Also, Williamson's technique was more suited to the wicket in Chennai. However, the 'Orange Army’ went in with Jonny Bairstow and Mohammad Nabi as their other two overseas players, with David Warner and Rashid Khan certain to start.

SRH coach Trevor Bayliss has now revealed the reason to bench Kane Williamson. Bayliss said that he felt that Williamson needs a little more time to get match fit, adding that he will come into SRH’s calculations as the tournament progresses. Williamson is recovering from a small tear in his left elbow tendon that he suffered during the New Zealand vs Australia T20I series.

“We just felt that Kane needed a little bit of extra time to get match fit and a little bit more time in the nets. He would have played in place of Jonny Bairstow obviously if that had occurred. But we aren’t too perturbed about that, Jonny has been in form recently in white-ball cricket here in India. Kane will obviously come into calculations as the tournament unfolds,” claimed Bayliss.

Bairstow, who played in place of Williamson had a decent start to the tournament. The England batsmen helped SRH recover from early blows and stitched a 92 run stand with Manish Pandey, scoring a 40 ball 55. It was the efforts of Bairstow that helped SRH claw back into the match. Till the time he was on the wicket, SRH was in the game but his dismissal derailed SRH's innings as the other batsmen, including the set Manish Pandey couldn’t break free as SRH went down by 10 runs.
