Sledging is not something that’s appreciated but we can’t deny that we all like it if done within a limit. A few exchange of words, a stare or two spices up the contest and takes our excitement to another level. While we believe that players should not tarnish the image of the ‘gentlemen’s game’, sometimes the emotions get the better of the players who get involved in incidents that they regret for life.
Here we’ll talk about the ugliest sledging incidents on a cricket field
5 – Vivian Richards and Merv Hughes
Merv Hughes was known as the ‘Master Sledger’. When Australia toured West Indies in 1991 for a 5 match Test series, Hughes had a different approach to the game. He tried to distract Vivian Richards by giving him a stare after every delivery. Richards was not impressed with Hughes and said “ “Don’t you be staring at me, man. This is my island, my culture. And in my culture, we bowl”. Hughes, who wasn’t ready to take a step back replied by saying” “In my culture, we just say f*** off.”
4 – Andrew Symonds and Harbhajan Singh
The India tour of Australia was marred by controversies. The incident we’re talking about happened in the controversial Sydney Test in 2008 where Andrew Symonds accused Harbhajan Singh for a racist remark. After an inquiry, Harbhajan was banned for three tests which irked the BCCI who threatened to pull out of the tour. The ban was later revoked on appeal and it was revealed that it was Symonds who hurdled abuses at the Indian off spinner which led to Harbhajan giving it back to the Australian.
3– Quinton de Kock and David Warner
In an ugly incident, David Warner and Quinton de Kock were involved in a physical brawl post the tea interval in the first Test of Autralia’s tour of South Africa in 2018. It is believed that de Kock fired some personal remarks towards Warner’s wife Candice which saw Warner losing his cool on de Kock. In a video that circulated on the internet, Warner can be seen remonstrating with de Kock as the teams walk upstairs. The video also showed Warner being held back by Uman Khawaja.
2 – Ramnaresh Sarwan and Glenn McGrath
The incident took place in one of the most exciting cricket matches in the history of the game. Chasing a record 418 to win, West Indies were 236/4 when Glenn McGrath tried to sledge Sarvan by questioning him ” What does Brian Lara’s d*** taste like?”
Sarvan gave it back to McGrath by saying “ I don’t know ask your wife”. This got McGrath fuming who said, “If you f*****g mentioned my wife again, I’ll rip your throat out”. Sarvan didn’t knew that McGrath’s wife was suffering from cancer.
1 – Shane Warne and Marlon Samuels
It all started when Marlon Samuels pulled David Hussey’s shirt when he was going for a second run in the Melbourne Renegades vs Melbourne Stars match in 2013 edition of the Big Bash League. Shane Warne wasn’t impressed and was seen pulling Samuels shirt, when he was batting, and abusing him even being live on the microphone. Warne had no control over his emotions and thew the ball at Samuels, who in return threw his bat in Warne’s direction.
