The 16th edition of the Asia Cup is all set to begin on 30 August 2023. Due to the proposed hybrid model by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), this tournament is going to be co-hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

This time, it will be the 14th edition which will be played in a 50-over format. Over all these years, various batters from different Asian teams managed to perform brilliantly with some top century and fifty-plus knocks.   

Here are the Top Five Batters with the Most Fifties in Asia Cup ODIs:

5.Sourav Ganguly & 4 others, 4 Fifties:

A total of 5 players are in the joint fifth spot with four fifties in ODIs in the history of the tournament. Umar Akmal from Pakistan, Sourav Ganguly and Mohammad Azharuddin from India, and Chamara Kapugedara and Aravinda de Silva from Sri Lanka are on the list. 

However, Akmal notched up those fifties in 12 matches. While Ganguly scored those fifties in 13 matches. Kapugedara smashed these fifties in 11 innings while Azharuddin in 13 innings. Meanwhile, Aravinda de Silva took 22 innings to score these fifties from 1984 to 2000.

4. Gautam Gambhir & Misbah-ul-Haq, 5 Fifties:

Both these players are in the fourth spot with five fifties each. Gautam Gambhir has hit five fifties in 13 innings from 2008 to 2012. During that span, he scored 573 runs at an average of 44.07 with a strike rate of 89.95.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Misbah-ul-Haq has notched up these fifties in 13 innings from 2008 to 2014. However, he has not scored a single century in the Asia Cup. In 14 matches, he scored 419 runs at an average of 46.55 with a strike rate of 85.51.

3. Rohit Sharma & 5 others, 6 Fifties

A total of 6 players have managed to score 6 fifties in the Asia Cup, ODI history so far. The current Team India skipper, Rohit Sharma has hit these fifties in 21 innings. Along with him, Sri Lanka’s Marvan Atapattu and Arjuna Ranatunga scored these fifties in 12 and 19 innings respectively.

India’s Navjot Sindhu also has six cities to his name in 12 innings from 1988 to 1997. Bangladesh’s Tamim Iqbal is on this list also as he has not scored a single century so far in this tournament. Iqbal has scored those in 13 innings. While Pakistan’s Inzamam-ul-Haq also hit six fifties in 13 innings.     

2. Sachin Tendulkar & Mahela Jayawardene, 7 Fifties:

Both these legends of the game are in the joint second spot with seven fifties to their name. Sachin Tendulkar and Mahela Jayawardene were the pillars of India’s and Sri Lanka’s batting lineup respectively. Tendulkar hit seven fifties in 21 innings.

While Jayawardene scored those fifties in 26 innings from 2000 to 2014. In 28 matches, this star Lankan batter scored 674 runs, at an average of 29.30 with a strike rate of 87.64. However, he did not score a single century.     

1. Kumar Sangakkara, 8 Fifties:

This star Lankan wicketkeeper batter tops the chat with eight fifties in 23 innings from 20004 to 2014. Kumar Sangakkara is also one of the two batters who has scored more than 1,000 runs in this competition. 

Sangakkara scored 1075 runs in 24 matches, at an average of 48.86 with a strike rate of 84.51. Apart from these fifties, he also scored four centuries. This star Southpaw batter had always been a tough player to handle for the opposition.
