India women’s hockey team scripted history by qualifying for their maiden Olympic semifinal, defeating three-time champions Australia 1-0. Earlier, the Indian men’s team also qualified for the Olympic semifinal after a long hiatus of 49 years. The Australian team had only conceded one goal coming into the quarterfinals and were huge favourites to claim a podium finish but the Indian eves were up for the stern challenge.
Drag-flicker Gurjit Kaur got India off to a blistering start by dodging a goal in the 22nd minute to stun Australia. India were tight on their defence and didn’t allow Australia any opportunity to level. India’s best performance prior to this in women’s hockey in Olympics was when they finished fourth out of six teams in the 1980 Moscow Olympics. The Rani Rampal-led side will play Argentina in the semifinal on Wednesday.
“We are so happy, it is the result of hard work that we put in for several, several days. In 1980, we qualified for the Games but this time, we made the semifinals. It is a proud moment for us,” Gurjit said after the match." "This team is like a family, we have supported each other and found support from the country as well. We are very happy,” she added.
Meanwhile, the sports fraternity hailed the Indian girls for their stunning victory.
Our girls have created history.
