In pursuit of a 133-run total, Gujarat made a great start in the powerplay. Wriddhiman Saha, once again, played in an aggressive fashion and helped team reach 53 runs without any loss of wickets in the first six overs. Shubman Gill, on the other hand, was happy to play as the second fiddle.

Chennai, though, got the first breakthrough just after the power play. Making his debut in the league, Matheesha Pathirana got Shubman Gill out leg-before on the very first ball of his spell in the 7th over of the innings. Gill got out after scoring 18 runs in 17 balls.

However, Saha ensured runs kept coming at a decent scoring rate. He went on to score a half-century in 42 balls. Mathew Wade (20 off 17), once again, failed to convert his start into a big score, while Pandya (7 off 6) failed to pick a slower ball from Pathirana. However, Saha and Miller guided the team comfortably in the end. Wriddhiman Sahah stayed right till the end and played a match-winning knock of 67 runs in 57 balls, including 8 fours and 1 six.

Earlier, Gujarat restricted Chennai to just 131 runs in the first innings. Mohammed Shami struck in his second over as he had Conway caught-behind in only the third over of the innings. The man in form, Devon Conway departed after scoring just 5 runs in 9 balls.

However, Ruturaj Gaikwad held firm at one end. He stitched a 57-run partnership with Moeen Ali (21 off 17) before the latter was dismissed off Sai Kishore in the 9th over. Just when it looked like Moeen Ali would change gears, he swept the ball straight at the man at Deep mid-wicket. At the end of 10 overs, Chennai had managed 73 runs and needed to up the ante.

However, neither Gaikwad nor Jagadeesan could play aggressively and runs came at a very slow rate. The duo added 36 runs in the next five overs. Ruturaj Gaikwad had reached his half-century, however, just when it was time to change gears, Gaikwad departed.

Rashid Khan sent a well-set Gaikwad (53 off 49) back to the hut in the 16th over, while Shivam Dube got out caught two balls later. MS Dhoni struggled to hit the straps and could only managed 7 runs in 10 balls. In the final five overs, Chennai only managed to score 24 runs and, in the end, were restricted to just 133 runs at the end of the first innings.

For Gujarat, Mohammed Shami was the pick of the bowlers as he claimed bowling figures of 2 for 19 in 4 overs. Rashid Khan (1 for 31), once again, was impressive with the ball.
