Along with other performances, Shardul Thakur and Washington Sundar, an all-rounder pair, stitched together an iconic 123-run partnership for the seventh wicket on January 17, 2021, at the Gabba to instil hope in Indian hearts. The duo rescued the visitors from danger and laid the groundwork for the iconic victory later on.

Team India conceded 369 runs in the first innings while fielding a playing XI that included two debutants, T Natarajan and Sundar. In response, India fell to 186-6 and were on course to concede a significant lead that the hosts would exploit.

Thakur and Sundar, on the other hand, stood tall against the dominant Australian bowling team. The pair were unafraid to play their strokes and dashed the hosts' hopes of claiming a commanding lead after the first innings.

The partnership, which included Thakur's extravagant play and Sundar's unflappable strokeplay in his first red-ball match, was crucial to the eventual victory at the Gabba in Brisbane that ended Australia's 36-year winning streak. Sundar scored 62 runs and Thakur scored 67 runs to help India cut the deficit to 33 runs, which proved crucial as the game progressed.

Mohammed Siraj, despite being a newcomer, led the bowling attack with a five-wicket haul in the second innings. Shardul Thakur took four wickets as Australia were bowled out for 294 runs, setting India a target of 328 to win both the Test and the four-match series.

Shubman Gill and Cheteshwar Pujara's crucial partnership inspired both the team and the fans. As the visitors approached the target with three overs remaining, Rishabh Pant hit an unbeaten 89, aided by a cameo from Sundar.
