South African captain Temba Bavuma was elated after his side defeated Australia by five wickets in the WTC 2025 Final at Lord’s in London to end their ICC title drought, winning their first-ever ICC title since 1998.
Delving into the details of the game, Australia was tasked to bat first after losing the toss. They could post only 212 runs in 56.4 overs, with Kagiso Rabada scalping a brilliant five-wicket haul. In response, South Africa got bundled out for 138 runs in 57.1 overs as Pat Cummins pocketed a six-wicket haul.
In the third innings, Australia posted 207 runs to take a 281-run lead. Kagiso Rabada continued his good momentum, scalping another four wickets. In the fourth innings, Markram smacked a 136-run knock off 207 balls to steer his side to a five-wicket win.
“It's been a special couple of days, at some points it felt like we were in SA. We prepared hard, we came in with a lot of belief and lot of doubters, glad we played well. Special moment for us and people back home, probably will sink in in a couple of days,” Temba Bavuma said at the post-match presentation ceremony.
“The energy was there, I think us as a team have been wanting this. We've been relentless, getting to the doorstep consistently and experienced heartache, the sun's been with us. Hopefully, this win is one of many,” he added.
Furthermore, Bavuma hailed Kagiso Rabada, who scalped a nine-wicket match haul, and Aiden Markram, who bagged a duck in the team’s first innings and went on to score a match-winning century in the fourth innings.
“KG is a massive player, a couple of days ago I went to the Hall of Fame inductees, I think he'll be there in a few years. Came into the game under controversy and did what he did. Aiden is unbelievable, people have questioned his place, but he has character. He played in true Aiden fashion, he and Rabada have carried the character,” he stated.
“We got ourselves into the final, there were doubters on the route we took, this win squashes that. Here's an opportunity for us as a nation, divided as we are, to unite. You can be rest assured we'll celebrate as on,” he concluded.
