No one had even dreamed that a young Team India would triumph in a format they had debuted in just a few months ago. But it happened under MS Dhoni, India defeated Pakistan in the final of the 2007 T20 World Cup in Johannesburg and scripted history.
Senior players like Sachin Tendulkar, Anil Kumble, Sourav Ganguly, and Rahul Dravid had decided to skip the event. The Indian team was already down in morale after the poor showing in the ICC ODI World Cup earlier that year, where they were eliminated in the group stage itself.
However, a young Indian team under the inspirational captaincy of MS Dhoni lost only one game in the tournament and defeated the likes of England, South Africa, Australia, and Pakistan (twice) to become the very first ICC T20 World Champions.

15. Piyush Chawla
Piyush Chawla remained the only player of the Indian squad who didn’t play a single game in the T20 World Cup 2007. He played 3 Tests, 25 ODIs, and 7 T20Is for India, taking a total of 43 wickets. Despite going out of favor with the Indian team, Chawla continued to be a major player in Indian domestic cricket and the Indian Premier League.
Chawla was also part of the Indian squad that won the 2011 World Cup at home. He was a huge part of the KKR team that won the IPL in 2012 and 2014 and picked 192 wickets in 192 matches in the T20 competition. Chawla announced his retirement from all cricket in June 2025 and has moved into commentary work.
14. Ajit Agarkar
Ajit Agarkar was one of the most senior members of the Indian 2007 T20 World Cup squad, along with Harbhajan Singh, having made his debut for India in 1998. Agarkar played only two games in the tournament, taking one wicket. He managed to play 26 Tests, 191 ODIs, and 4 T20Is for India.
However, that was it for his international career, and Agarkar continued plying his trade in the IPL and for Mumbai. He retired from all cricket in 2013 and made his move to administration, becoming the chief selector of the Mumbai Ranji Team. He is currently the chief selector of the BCCI selection committee.
13. Joginder Sharma
Joginder Sharma only played four T20Is but is remembered as a hero for bowling the memorable delivery that took Misbah-ul-Haq's wicket in the final, which won India the T20 World Cup. It was his final delivery for India. He played 16 IPL games for the Chennai Super Kings, taking 12 wickets. However, he completely moved away from cricket and is now a Deputy Superintendent of Police in the Haryana Police Force.
12. S. Sreesanth
Sreesanth played 7 matches for India in the T20 World Cup 2007 and got six wickets at an economy rate of 7.95. His bowling in India’s semi-final win over Australia is still remembered, and he has been immortalized for taking that catch of Misbah Ul Haq that took India to victory.
Sreesanth continued to play his trade for India and even won the 2011 World Cup. However, he was banned from all cricket when he was named as one of the cricketers involved in the spot-fixing scandal in IPL 2013. He returned to cricket in 2021 and retired the following year. Since then, Sreesanth has moved to commentary and playing in the Legends League.
11. Robin Uthappa
Robin Uthappa, a former Indian player, participated in all seven games and amassed 113 runs in six innings. He scored with a strike rate of 113 and averaged 18.83 during the T20 World Cup. Post the glory, Uthappa remained inthe Indian team plans for limited overs but last played for India in 2015.
He remained a pillar for KKR in IPL, winning the 2012 and 2014 IPL titles with the franchise. He moved to CSK in later years and retired from IPL in 2021 and from all cricket in 2022. Since then, he has moved to playing legends cricket and being an expert on various cricketing websites.
10. Yusuf Pathan
Yusuf Pathan had made his India debut in the 2007 T20 World Cup final against Pakistan and made 15 quick runs. Post the T20 World Cup glory, he became a huge part of the Indian limited-overs team and was also part of the Indian squad that won the 2011 ICC ODI World Cup. He last played for India in 2012.
He continued to be part of the Indian Premier League till the 2017 edition and also played for Dubai Capitals in ILT20. However, after retiring from all cricket, Yusuf Pathan joined politics and is the Lok Sabha MP for TMC from Bengal’s Baharampur constituency.
9. RP Singh
RP Singh topped the wicket-taking list for India in the T20 World Cup 2007. He took 12 wickets from seven matches at an average of 12.66. He remained part of the Indian team till 2011 and played 14 Tests, 58 ODIs, and 10 T20Is, taking a total of 124 wickets in international cricket.
He continued in IPL after his international goodbye till the 2016 season, and after that, he moved on to becoming a known name in Hindi commentary. He also continues to play cricket in the Legends League Cricket.
8. Irfan Pathan
Player of the Match for India in the T20 World Cup 2007 final for his 3 wickets, Irfan Pathan made his India debut in 2008. He played 29 Tests, taking 100 wickets, 173 scalps in 120 ODIs, and 28 wickets in 24 T20Is, playing his final game for India in 2012. Injuries and form led to him being sidelined from the Indian team.
He continued in IPL and only retired from all cricket in 2020. Since he retired from the cricket field, Irfan Pathan has transitioned into a cricket expert and commentator. He has also acted in a Tamil movie and has a YouTube channel as well.
7. Dinesh Karthik
Dinesh Karthik played the 2007 T20 World Cup as a finisher, with MS Dhoni being the wicket-keeper. His best moment in the tournament, however, came as a wicketkeeper, when he took an amazing catch against South Africa to dismiss Graeme Smith.
A man of several comebacks, Dinesh Karthik last played for India in 2022 in the T20 World Cup, and his last ODI came in the 2019 World Cup. He retired from IPL in 2024 and joined the Royal Challengers Bengaluru as their batting coach and mentor. He is also one of the leading commentators and cricket experts in the world.
6. Gautam Gambhir
Gautam Gambhir played the innings of the final, taking India to a safe total in the T20 World Cup 2007 against Pakistan. After the tournament, he continued to be part of the Indian team till 2013 and was part of the 2011 World Cup-winning Indian team, against whom he was the top scorer in the final. He last played for India in 2016 and continued playing cricket in the IPL till 2018.
Since he retired from all cricket, Gambhir has played in legends cricket and turned mentor-cum-coach in the IPL, leading KKR to the IPL 2024 title. He is currently the head coach of the Indian team across three formats.
5. Virender Sehwag
The big smashing opener, Virender Sehwag, scored 133 runs in the T20 World Cup. He missed the final due to a groin injury. He continued to be part of the Indian team till 2012, also winning the ICC World Cup 2011 under MS Dhoni. However, eyesight issues and form led to him losing his spot on the Indian team in 2012.
Sehwag continued to be part of the IPL till 2015 and announced his retirement from all forms the same year. Virender Sehwag has turned into a commentator in Hindi with a very funny and straightforward way of putting his words across.
4. Rohit Sharma
Rohit Sharma was a youngster, playing his first ICC event in the 2007 T20 World Cup. He made a fifty against South Africa in the must-win game for India and pushed India's total into a safe category in the final against Pakistan with a 37-run knock. Rohit Sharma continued to flounder in the middle order after the T20 title win.
But in 2013, Rohit’s fortunes changed, as he began opening for the Indian team and also made his Test debut the same year. Later in 2022, he became the Indian captain and led the Men in Blue to the 2024 T20 World Cup win and the 2025 Champions Trophy win. Rohit retired from T20Is and Test cricket and will only play ODIs going forward.
3. Harbhajan Singh
Harbhajan Singh was a vital bowler for India in the middle overs, taking seven wickets in a row. He had a strike rate of 19.71 and an average of 26 at the end. He continued for India and won the 2011 World Cup as well. However, he gradually lost his spot on the Indian team across formats after 2012 and last played for India in 2016.
After retirement, Harbhajan Singh played for different legends leagues and has transitioned into commentary. Harbhajan Singh also became a YouTuber. Apart from this, he is also a member of Parliament from the AAP party.
2. Yuvraj Singh
Yuvraj Singh had the moment of the T20 World Cup 2007 when he hit six sixes in six balls to Stuart Broad. He scored 148 runs from five innings at an awe-inspiring strike rate of 194.73. Yuvraj Singh also won the ICC ODI World Cup in 2011 and ended as the Player of the Tournament. However, the cancer treatment derailed his brilliant career.
Yuvraj Singh was never the same once he returned from cancer, and his form and fitness suffered. He managed to stay relevant in Indian cricket till 2017 and announced retirement from all cricket after 2019, once his IPL career ended. Yuvraj Singh has featured in Legends League Cricket since his retirement and has been coaching youngsters like Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma.
1. MS Dhoni
MS Dhoni, who was captaining the Indian team for the first time, won the T20 World Cup 2007, defeating Pakistan in the final. With the bat, Dhoni played a vital 45-run knock off 33 balls against South Africa. His 18-ball 36 against the Aussies in the semifinals was also a very impactful innings. Dhoni continued as India captain, winning the 2011 World Cup and 2013 Champions Trophy as well.
He quit the India Test captaincy in 2014 and the limited-overs captaincy in 2017. After the ICC World Cup in 2019, MS Dhoni retired from all international cricket. However, he remains active as a cricketer in the Indian Premier League and has won five titles with the Chennai Super Kings.
