Former Indian cricketer and commentator Sanjay Manjrekar has heaped praise on the Indian opening batter KL Rahul for his consistent approach in the ongoing England tour. Notably, Rahul scored 46 runs from 98 balls with four boundaries on the opening day of the Manchester Test.

Speaking on JioHotstar, Manjrekar asserted that Rahul has the right kind of approach to play shots for doubles instead of pushing them hard for boundaries. He added that Rahul didn’t put a foot wrong in the ongoing series and India is blessed to have him find consistency.

“KL Rahul has the right kind of approach to playing shots. Now, they say in England, when the ball is pitched up, you play the drive to get two runs, not a boundary. And that's exactly what he did with the two cover drives he played. This is a guy who hasn’t put a foot wrong in the series and continues to perform. So India is blessed with a KL Rahul who’s finally found consistency in the way he’s batted,” Manjrekar said on JioHotstar.

It's important to note that Rahul is the third-leading run-scorer of the series with 421 runs from seven innings at an average of 60.14. Notably, he is only behind Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant in the tally.

With the outfield not so fast, a lot of shots played by Rahul were converted only for two runs. Manjrekar further reckoned that KL Rahul is playing perfectly well on the expected terms and young batters would be taking a cue in the coming years with a lot of SENA tours planned every two years.

“It’s not a quick outfield, so a lot of the shots he played went for two runs. But yes, this is exactly what we expect from KL Rahul. We also see a lot of young batters now getting right up there with the legends of the past, and doing it consistently. One reason is they’re performing well. The other is India now plays a lot of Test matches in places like England, Australia, and South Africa, almost every two years,” he added.
