Speaking about the Indian captain's performances, Surya could score only 218 runs in the ongoing calendar year from 21 T20Is at an average of 13.62 and a strike rate of 123.16, with the highest score of an unbeaten 47-run knock.

Speaking at the press conference after the World Cup squad announcement, Surya has emphasized that he knows where things are going wrong and has admitted that he would correct them before the showpiece event.

"Yeh wala (lean) patch thoda lamba hogaya (This lean patch has been a bit too long). I'm sure everyone has seen this in their respective careers, and I will overcome it," Suryakumar said at the press conference after the squad announcement

"I know what to do and where things are going wrong. I've got some time. The New Zealand series is coming up and then the all-important T20 World Cup. You will definitely see Surya the batter," he added.

On Saturday, December 20, the Indian selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, announced the T20 World Cup squad, with Shubman Gill being omitted alongside Jitesh Sharma. Interestingly, Ishan Kishan and Rinku Singh were selected for the marquee event.

Notably, Kishan found a spot in the Indian squad, courtesy of his exceptional performances in the just-concluded Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025-26 campaign, in which he scored 517 runs from 10 games at an average of 57.44 and a strike rate of 197.32.
