Team India captain Suryakumar Yadav has responded to the New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner’s comments ahead of the grand finale against New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Speaking at the pre-match press conference against India, Santner asserted that his team’s primary goal is to keep the 130,000-strong home crowd quiet during the much-anticipated grand finale.

When asked about his response to Santner’s comments, Surya laughed off with a cheeky one-liner, "Sab he same line chipka rahe hai. Kuch to naya bolo (Everyone is now saying the same thing. Come up with something new)," Suryakumar told reporters.

Notably, the same strategy was used by the Australian captain Pat Cummins ahead of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 final in Ahmedabad. Following the same tactic, Santner expressed that his team’s goal is to play the spoiler for the hosts.

"The goal is to silence the crowd. There are a lot of variables in T20 cricket, and it is fickle at times. If we go about our business the same way, we can upset another big team. There is obviously a lot of pressure on India to win this World Cup at home,” Santner stated.

"I wouldn't mind breaking a few hearts to lift the trophy for once,” Santner added.

For the unversed, India, led by Suryakumar Yadav, has won every match except for the South Africa Super8 game. Later, they secured victories in the must-win games against Zimbabwe and the West Indies, and then defeated England in a high-scoring thriller in the semi-final to advance to the final.

Meanwhile, the Santner-led New Zealand made it to the semi-final despite losing to South Africa in the first round and to England in the Super Eight. However, they comfortably defeated the unbeaten South Africa in the semi-final to secure their spot in the grand finale.
