“It is too early to call anybody a sensation” - Sunil Gavaskar urges fans not to create too much hype around players like Vaibhav Suryavanshi

Former Indian batter and commentator Sunil Gavaskar has urged the Indian cricketing fraternity not to create huge hype around teenage batting sensations like Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who is currently plying his trade for India U19 in the ICC U19 World Cup 2026 campaign.

Writing his exclusive column for Mid-Day, Gavaskar stated that excessive attention could put a lot of pressure on players like him in the early stages of their careers. Notably, Vaibhav has been in exceptional form across formats in Youth cricket and IPL.

“It is too early to call anybody a sensation, as time and again it has been seen that there is a huge gap between Under-19 cricket and first-class cricket, not to speak of international cricket,” he wrote in his Mid-Day column. 

Vaibhav started off his IPL career with a first-ball six for the Rajasthan Royals during the IPL 2025 season. In his third IPL game of the previous season, he went on to score a 35-ball century. Later, he also went on to score a lot of runs in Youth ODIs against England, Australia, and South Africa. 

Furthermore, Gavaskar also wrote about India U19’s recent loss to Pakistan U19 in the ACC U19 Asia Cup 2025 final by 191 runs, stating that a few batters, influenced by their IPL experience, played with a lot of aggression and eventually suffered the consequences. Eventually, he hoped India U19 players would focus on the job at hand to win the ICC trophy in Zimbabwe and Namibia.

“Yes, it’s a young group, inexperienced too and that’s why it’s important for a senior player and mentor to tell them that however ordinary the attack, one mistake can mean you are back in the dugout. Let’s hope that they forget thoughts of IPL and focus on the job at hand and that is to win the Trophy once again. Go for it youngsters," he added.
