“I don’t think they will be playing 2027 ODI World Cup” - Sunil Gavaskar on Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli

Former Indian captain and commentator Sunil Gavaskar feels Indian talismanic batters Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma might not play the ODI World Cup in 2027. Notably, both batters have already announced retirements from Tests and T20Is.

While Kohli has already expressed his goal of playing the next ODI World Cup, it would be interesting to see Rohit’s decision. However, Gavaskar doesn’t see it to be practical with two more years left for the mega event.

"They have been massive performers in this format of the game. Again, the selection committee will probably be looking at the 2027 World Cup. They will be looking at whether they will be able to be in the team for the 2027 World Cup?' Will they be able to make the kind of contributions they have been making?' That will be the thought process of the selection committee. If the selection committee thinks 'yes, they can', then both of them will be there for that," Gavaskar told Sports Today.

When Gavaskar was asked to share his views on whether he would see Kohli and Rohit to be a part of the ODI team in the ICC mega event two years later, he came up with an honest response.

"No, I don't think they will be playing. I am being very honest. But, who knows, in the next year or so, if they strike a rich vein of form, and if they keep scoring hundreds and hundreds, even God can't drop them," Gavaskar stressed.

In the 2023 ODI World Cup held in India, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli gave their best in taking India to the grand finale after winning all the group stage games and knockout fixtures. However, they failed to create an impact in the final to miss the silverware against Australia at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
