Former Indian cricketer and commentator Sunil Gavaskar has opined on India’s major concern about the Indian opening batter Sanju Samson getting out at deep mid-wicket against Namibia on Thursday, February 12, in Delhi.

Speaking on Star Sports, Gavaskar reckoned that Samson got out similarly in the past, which is a worrying point for the Indian team management moving into the game against Pakistan on Sunday, February 15, in Colombo.

However, Gavaskar is confident of Samson scoring all his recently missed runs in the group stage game against the arch-rivals Pakistan. Notably, Samson had a poor series against New Zealand and lost his spot to Ishan Kishan. However, with Abhishek Sharma unfit, Samson made it to the opening spot.

"The way Sanju Samson got out... he has gotten out in that area in the past too. Clearly that is something that will make the management a little bit nervous, because in case Abhishek is not fit for the game on Sunday, then Samson will play. Hopefully he will have kept all the runs for that game - all the runs he didn't get against New Zealand and even today, he will be expected to get in that particular match," Sunil Gavaskar said on Star Sports.

"Apart from that, it was a very good performance. The way Ishan Kishan batted, and Hardik's performance was great too,” he added.

Speaking after the 93-run win against Namibia, the Indian captain, Suryakumar Yadav, hailed Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan for the way they started things off on a dominant note. Moreover, he lauded Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dube for maintaining the momentum in the middle overs.

"It was not an easy wicket to bat on, but the way Ishan and Sanju started, it didn't look like it was a difficult wicket. And then the partnership between Shivam and Hardik - the way they batted after losing two or three quick wickets - I think it was very commendable," Yadav said in the post-match presentation ceremony.
