On Wednesday, the first day of the first Test in Galle, Steven Smith became the latest member of the elite list of batsmen to reach 10,000 runs in Test cricket. After just missing the milestone against India at his home ground, the storied Sydney Cricket Ground, Smith arrived in Sri Lanka on 9999 runs, only the second instance of such an instance of a batter getting out at 9999 runs.

He achieved this milestone in the 205th innings of his career which makes him the 5th fastest batter to do so. This prestigious list contains some of the most legendary names in test cricket.

Right at the top of the list, the first position is shared by three gems of the game - Brina Lara, Sachin Tendulkar and Kumar Sangakkara. All these individuals achieved this feat in their 195th innings, however, they differ in the number of matches taken to it.

Lara needed just 111 matches to make this record while Sachin took 122 matches for the same and 115 matches by Sangakkara. Next on the list is the Australian great, Ricky Ponting, who made it possible in his 196th innings, needing 118 matches for the same.

After Smith comes “The Wall” of test cricket, Rahul Dravid. The Indian legend had achieved this feat in the 206th innings of his career. Younis Khan from Pakistan reached this glory in his 208th innings and occupies the seventh position in the list.

Another Sri Lankan fine on the list is Mahela Jayawardene who made this record in the 210th innings of his career. The only guy on the list from a completely different era of cricket, Sunil Gavaskar find the next place on the list with 212 innings. Last but certainly not the least, Jacques Kallis occupies the 10th place in the list having reached the record in his 217th innings.
